Uno dei miei thriller preferiti, un giovane, di nome Beecher White lavora presso gli Archivi Nazionali di Washington, deposito dei documenti istituzionali più importanti dell’America, dalla dichiarazione di indipendenza ai rapporti sulle possibilità di catturare Bin Laden e tanto altro ancora.
Questo edificio oltre a contenere grandi e piccoli segreti ha anche una stanza chiamata SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) dove si possono consultare documenti riservati in totale sicurezza. Stanza composta da due sedie di legno ed un armadietto di metallo che contiene un videoregistratore collegato ad una videocamera che filma tutto, un ampio tavolo ed un telefono criptato. In questa stanza il presidente degli Stati Uniti, Oscar Wallace, è solito rilassarsi con quelle che lui definisce visite di lettura, ed è proprio durante una di queste visite che Beecher viene convinto ad entrare con Orlando, sorvegliante della sicurezza, ed un amica, Clementine. Quello che accade è un susseguirsi di episodi particolari, un bicchiere di caffè cade sulla scrivania e nel trambusto una delle sedie che cade sul lato per terra fa intravedere una piccola cartelletta dove all’interno i tre troveranno un dizionario appartenente a George Washington; vorrebbero far finta di nulla ma l’imminente arrivo di Wallace fa sì che i tre decidono di impadronirsi oltre che del dizionario presente nella cartelletta anche della videocassetta che le aveva registrati.
Thriller composto da molti colpi di scena e professionalmente inseriti. Laddove i libri così custodiscono i segreti della storia americana e dove l’autore ci permette di comprendere il livello ed il potere del Presidente degli Stati Uniti.
